TML

The Theology and Ministry Library (TML) supports research, teaching, and learning at the School of Theology and Ministry and Saint John's Seminary. The library's 250,000 volume collection is especially strong in biblical studies, Catholic theology and history, canon law, and Jesuitica. As part of the larger Boston College University Libraries system, the TML offers STM students full access to the Libraries’ 2.75 million print volumes, 400,000 e-books, 41,000 print and electronic journals, 650 databases of full text articles and citations, and over 4.3 million units of microform. The TML is also a member library of the Boston Theological Institute Libraries and Resources Network whose libraries' combined collections—to which STM students have full borrowing access--number nearly 1.5 million volumes in theology and related discipline.

In addition, because of its close relationship to the highly respected New Testament Abstracts which are edited and published at Boston College, the TML is a depository of virtually all significant international publications in New Testament and related fields.

Witness to Faith: The Biblical Art of Sadao Watanabe
October 5-December 20, 2017

Japan’s foremost Christian artist, Sadao Watanabe (1913-1996) converted from Buddhism to Christianity at 17 years old. He soon combined his new faith with an interest in preserving the traditional Japanese folk art of stencil dying, or katazome, by creating colorful representation of biblical scenes that he hoped would speak to his people. He said, ‘My task is to stand within the artistic tradition of Japan…Theology will not take deep root in Japanese soil if it is merely an import.” Each hand cut print has been created using a complicated traditional stencil art form formally used for dying kimonos.

His prints are part of many international collections including the Vatican Museum, National Galleries in Washington, DC and London, the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, and the National Museum of Modern Art in Tokyo.

Watanabe’s chief desire was to create art that could be enjoyed by common people and displayed in ordinary settings. Witness to Faith hopes to help fulfill his wishes by offering over 30 of his original momigami (wrinkled paper) and washi (Japanese paper) prints, calendars that have been printed since the early 1970s, and stencil Christmas cards he made for friends.

Witness to Faith is sponsored by the Boston College Libraries and the Boston College School of Theology & Ministry.

The main research library, the O'Neill Library, is located in the center of the main campus, adjoining the O'Neill Plaza. O'Neill Library holds 1.4 million volumes of the Boston College Libraries research collections in a broad range of subjects reflecting the University's extensive curriculum. These include general reference materials, indexes, the circulating collections, media, government documents, and other research materials housed on the five floors of O'Neill Library and at three remote collection sites.
