Biography

Elizabeth P Howard PhD, RN, ANP, ACNP-BC, FAAN is an Associate Professor at the Connell School of Nursing and an Associate Fellow in interRAI, a collaborative network of researchers, representing 35 countries, who share a commitment to improve the quality of life for vulnerable populations.   Dr. Howard’s research and scholarly activities focus on underserved older adults in the US and abroad within two intersecting domains.  In one, she continues to refine a ‘healthy aging’ intervention consisting of comprehensive geriatric assessment (from the interRAI assessment suite), along with a wellness coaching program that promotes an alternative to standardized disease and symptom management approaches. In the second domain, Dr. Howard contributes nursing expertise to the development, testing and implementation of geriatric models using interRAI’s national and international data to address common geriatric syndromes including loneliness, functional decline, falls, cognitive loss, unsafe driving among others. Dr. Howard also maintains a collaborative relationship as an Adjunct Scientist with the Marcus Institute for Aging Research, a Harvard Medical School affiliate within Hebrew SeniorLife.

During her tenure at Northeastern University, Dr. Howard spearheaded two innovative, nurse practitioner programs responsive to the unique needs of vulnerable, underserved populations. She developed, implemented and evaluated the Acute Care Nurse Practitioner (ACNP) Program with a Geriatric Specialty, the first graduate ACNP program in Massachusetts to focus on the hospitalized geriatric patient.  Her leadership with critical care graduate education also included development of the first Master’s degree, neonatal nurse practitioner (NNP) program in New England, and specifically addressed high infant mortality in the greater Boston area.

Dr. Howard maintains and enhances her skills as an adult nurse practitioner clinician through her advanced clinical practice at Harvard Vanguard Medical Associates. Dr. Howard has received numerous awards and fellowships including her induction into the American Academy of Nursing in 2017.
