The certificate in Special Education is designed to enhance practicing educators’ knowledge and skill for teaching students who may have disabilities. This certificate is not intended for special educators but rather for general education professionals whose students include those who may have disabilities (regardless if they are receiving special education or related services). Therefore, it will be of practical help to teachers in inclusive classrooms, who participate in RTI (response to intervention), and who co-teach.
This certificate is designed for practicing educators who teach in a range of inclusive schooling contexts, but who feel underprepared to meet their students’ needs. It is appropriate for educators in public, private, parochial and other religious schools.

Students will enroll in three courses. Course topics include special education (and related) teaching methods, developmental nature of disabilities, and special education policies & practices. At least one course must be a teaching methods course. Course selection and focus on mild-moderate/high incidence disabilities or severe & multiple/low incidence disabilities will be made in consultation with a faculty advisor. All courses are relevant to educators who are not special educators.
This certificate consists of three courses for a total of nine credits.
Full time or part time students will typically complete the certificate in one year.
Students can begin the program in the fall, spring, or summer semesters.

If you are a current student and have not completed your undergraduate and/or graduate degree, the most updated version of your transcript is acceptable.
